MEDIA - Linking to images that are already on the server

Hi...
is it possible to add media to a product, without uploading it (better linking it to an existing file), because i have ALL images that i will need already on the server in a very big data tree (thousends of images) in this TYPO3 Instalation...

The media panels in the admin backend doesn't support that yet, even if we would like to have that feature too. Maybe you can sponsor it partly to get that into the core :-)
