OK, problem understood.
We've optimized loading of categories to avoid loading the complete category tree which may not be displayed afterwards. To activate displaying two or more levels of categories all the times, you have to add the number of levels in the flexform of the catalog/filter or catalog/tree plugin (whatever you are using) in the field for "Always display these category levels"
